As a former homicide prosecutor, I was trusted to handle the most complicated and serious criminal cases from the initial investigation, through guilty verdicts at trial. In these cases, I was the voice for the person whose voice was violently taken from them. Not only did I fearlessly present the cases before Judge and jury, I stood with the families of the victims to bring justice for their loved ones, guiding them through the most traumatic time in their lives. For some attorneys, the work is academic and cold. For me, my cases are personal ... a work of the heart, my passion. It is this personal attention, this emotional investment, that makes the difference in the way your case is handled.
I have always been committed to seeing and righting injustice. I graduated from the University of Central Florida in 1990 with a double major in Criminal Justice and Sociology. I was intent to learn how drugs and violence impacted our communities. After graduation, I worked as a felony probation officer for the Florida Department of Corrections in impoverished communities in South and Central Florida. I saw first hand how poverty, lack of emphasis on education, and lack of opportunity created generational patterns of incarceration and misfortune. I felt that I could do more and applied to law school in order to gain more tangible skills to address the problems.
During my time at the University of Florida College of Law, I participated in Gator TeamChild, a legal clinic developed to address the rights of children involved in the legal system . I worked on cases involving the educational rights of disabled children, juveniles charged with delinquency, and teenagers fighting for the custody rights of their own children. I also interned with the Office of the Public Defender, assisting in felony cases such as armed robbery, false imprisonment, drug possession, and grand theft. Even before graduating, I had the opportunity to experience the gravity of being responsible for the future of my clients and advocating for them in the courtroom.
After graduating from the University of Florida in 2000, I began my legal career as an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Appeals Division before becoming a prosecutor for the State Attorney's Office. In my 12 years as a prosecutor, I served in the Drug Unit, the Sex Crimes Unit, the Career Criminal Unit, and the Homicide Unit and served as a managing attorney responsible for training new and experienced lawyers and giving them the skills to protect our community. I have tried over 85 criminal jury trials and handled innumerable hearings in cases such as DUI, Drug Trafficking, Armed Robbery, Home Invasion, Burglary, Domestic Violence, Fleeing to Elude, Kidnapping, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Child Abuse, Sexual Battery, Lewd and Lascivious Molestation, Vehicular Homicide, Manslaughter, and Murder including death penalty cases.
I also spent over 7 years defending people charged with crimes in State and Federal Court. I served as Assistant Regional Counsel, representing indigent criminal defendants in Seminole, Volusia, and Flagler counties charged with misdemeanor and felony crimes. While working as Assistant Regional Counsel, I also ran my own private law firm focusing primarily on criminal defense, family law, and appeals. I handled adoptions, complex divorces, contentious child custody and dependency matters, and injunctions for protection against domestic violence.
